Feeding a group split across multiple holiday rentals

Group bookings of eight or more are climbing fast enough that rental platforms now routinely offer a cluster of neighbouring houses as a package once one villa can’t fit everyone. Great for privacy and snoring tolerance. Less great when three separate kitchens each quietly buy their own onions, bread and orange juice for the same breakfast.

Give each house a job, not a free-for-all

The default — everyone fends for themselves in their own house — is how you end up with three half-used bags of salad and no one covering dinner. Assign each property a meal or a night before you arrive, based on what it actually has to offer.

• •Pick a “kitchen HQ” for the big group dinners: whichever house has the largest oven, hobs and table.
• •Let smaller houses handle breakfast and lunch for their own residents — less transport, less mess.
• •Check each fridge and freezer separately; a big group shop is only useful if it actually fits somewhere.
• •Agree in advance who hosts, since “my house or yours” is a worse argument after a long travel day.

Shop once for the group, not once per house

Separate households instinctively shop separately, which is exactly how the same staples get bought three times while nobody buys the vegetables. Do one consolidated shop for anything shared — the ingredients for group dinners, drinks, snacks — and let each house handle only what’s specific to it.

Plan for carrying food between houses

If dinner is cooked at the kitchen HQ but some of the group sleeps two doors down, food still needs to travel — and a tray of lasagne loses its charm crossing a gravel driveway in the rain. Keep hot food service at the cooking house where possible, and reserve any transport for things that travel well: salads, bread, drinks, dessert.

Split the bill across households, not just heads

When two or three separate booking parties share food costs, a plain per-person split can quietly shortchange whichever house did most of the cooking and shopping. Track who actually paid for what as you go, rather than reconstructing three houses’ worth of receipts on the last morning.
